How can I help?

Scenario

I recently volunteered at a local community event. The organiser had sent out a call for support in the newsletter, and I decided to help out.

The Challenge

There were so many tasks; from setting up the venue to running stalls. The organisers were doing their best, but with so many volunteers and responsibilities, coordination became overwhelming.

The Turning Point

Instead of waiting for direction, I asked, “How can I help?”. That simple question created clarity and led me to tasks that actually made a difference, from kitchen duties to stall support.

Workflow

  1. Day before: The day before the event, I helped set up; organising plates, sorting drinks, and supporting where needed.

  2. On event day: I promoted the group I co-organise, shared space at another stall, and even helped other groups with raffle tickets.

  3. During event day: I supported with kitchen support, cleaning and organising as needed.

  4. After the event: I stayed behind to clear the hall, wash cutlery, and pack things away alongside fellow volunteers.

Key Lessons

  • There’s always a solution if you stay flexible.

  • When in doubt, simply ask how you can help.

  • Sometimes the most valuable contribution is stepping in to do the unseen tasks.

  • Volunteering reminded me that small acts of service create a big collective impact.
