Serving Behind the Music: Supporting Our Choir
Scenario
In our church choir, singing is part of what makes the service flow beautifully. Behind the scenes, there are small but important tasks that keep everything in order, like putting up the hymn numbers and managing the music sheets.
The Challenge
Often, during and after the service, choir members hand over their music sheets at different times. Without coordination, this could easily become messy or distracting, especially when everyone is focused on worship.
The Turning Point
I realised that supporting the choir is not just about helping with the singing, but also about helping with the rhythm of the service. By taking ownership of these behind-the-scenes duties, I can make things smoother for the choir.
Workflow
Preparation: Before the service, I put up the hymn numbers, so the congregation knows what is being sung.
Distribution: I help hand out the music sheets to choir members, ensuring everyone has what they need.
Supporting the Organist: During the service, I assist the organist with music as needed so transitions run smoothly.
Collection: During and after the service, I gather the sheets that members hand over.
Tidying Away: At the end, I carefully sort and store the music so it’s ready for next time.
Impact
It may seem simple, but these small acts of service make a big difference.
The service flows without distraction, and everything ends with order instead of clutter.
For me, it’s a reminder that leadership and service often happen quietly, in the background.
